New Brunswick funds first First Nation-run long-term care home in Elsipogtog

New Brunswick has announced the province's first licensed long-term care home operated by a First Nation, a 60-bed facility for Elsipogtog First Nation on Graham Road in Five Rivers. It will have 24 beds for residents with mobility challenges, 24 for people with memory loss and greater care needs, and 12 with full-time nursing care, with $10 million to $15 million in provincial funding. Construction is set to begin in the spring, with opening planned for spring 2029; Chief Arren Sock said keeping elders in the community will help preserve language and dignity.

First Nation-run long-term care keeps elders close to family, language and community — a model frontline workers in Indigenous and rural care may see replicated elsewhere.
