Continuing care assistant

Continuing care assistants (CCAs, Saskatchewan’s name for health care aides) support daily living, comfort and care under the direction of the healthcare team.

A day in the job

In long-term care you help residents get up and dressed, assist at meals, help with toileting and moving safely, and tell the nurse about any change you notice. It is physical work and often the closest relationship anyone on the team has with a resident.

Where you could work: Long-term care, home care, hospitals

How to get there

  1. Complete the Continuing Care Assistant certificate (Saskatchewan Polytechnic, also offered through the regional colleges)
  2. The Saskatchewan Health Authority and most long-term care homes require the certificate

Before you start work

  1. No licence is needed: CCAs are not a regulated profession in Saskatchewan
  2. Employers usually ask for a criminal record check, a vulnerable sector check and CPR

Trained outside Canada?

Continuing care assistant work does not need a Canadian licence, so it is a common first job for newcomers. Employers still ask for the CCA certificate or equivalent training.

Important: Requirements can change and may differ for internationally educated professionals. CareZelo links to official bodies but does not determine eligibility.
